Getting to the Hilton Hotel Location

The Hilton Hotel sits on Waddon Way, just off the A23 Purley Way in the Waddon area of Croydon. It is well connected by road and reasonably easy to find, though the surrounding estate roads are narrow and heavily parked, which is relevant because those same roads may feature on your test.

The nearest rail stations are Waddon (Southern, about an 8-minute walk) and Wallington (Southern, about 15 minutes). Bus routes along Purley Way and Stafford Road include the 127, 154 and 289.

Hotel parking is available but becomes chargeable after 15 minutes, so if your instructor is dropping you off and waiting, they may prefer to park on Waddon Way or Williams Terrace nearby. There is no facility to practise manoeuvres in the hotel car park.

If you have been preparing at the original Redhouse Road site, be aware that the starting point for your test is now different. The roads immediately around the Hilton are not the same as those around Mitcham Common. Make sure you and your instructor have driven the Waddon estate roads and the Purley Way approaches before your test.

Mitcham Pass Rates — Current DVSA Data

Mitcham’s pass rate sits close to the national average, a solid mid-table performance for a busy London-area centre.

A total of 15,046 practical tests were conducted at Mitcham in the 2025–26 period, making it one of the highest-volume centres in London. That large sample means the pass rate is a reliable indicator of real conditions rather than a statistical quirk.

Current waiting time: Approximately 12.3 weeks from booking to test date (DVSA data, July 2026). That is slightly above the national median of about 11 weeks. The wait has increased significantly, it was just over 4 weeks as recently as February 2026.

Monthly pass rates vary from around 44% to 50% across the year, with October typically showing the strongest results. Your individual preparation matters far more than the month you book.

Mitcham Test Routes — What Roads to Expect

Because car tests now start from the Hilton Hotel on Purley Way rather than Redhouse Road, the route landscape has shifted. Some traditional Mitcham routes around Mitcham Common and the Redhouse Road area may still feature, but routes now also take in the Waddon estate and the A23 corridor from the hotel starting point. Here is what to expect.

Roads and junctions you are likely to encounter:

The A23 Purley Way: This is the big one. Starting from the Hilton Hotel, you are on or adjacent to the A23 within moments of leaving. This is a fast-moving dual carriageway that requires confident merging, mirror checks, lane changes and awareness of multi-lane traffic light filters. If you are not comfortable at 40–50 mph in flowing traffic with lane choices to make, this is the road to practise most.

Lombard Roundabout : A large, busy roundabout near the A23 with multiple lanes, traffic lights on the approaches and heavy commuter traffic. Lane selection needs to happen early — hesitating or changing lanes mid-roundabout is a common serious fault here. Your instructor should take you through this roundabout at different times of day until the lane patterns feel automatic.

Rosehill Roundabout : A six-way roundabout that tests your lane awareness, positioning and ability to deal with traffic entering from multiple directions simultaneously. Examiners watch your mirror checks and signalling closely here.

Beddington Lane Roundabout : Located in a more industrial area with a 30 mph speed limit. It is less intimidating than Lombard or Rosehill, but the lane markings are less obvious and lorries from the surrounding industrial estates can obscure your view.

Waddon estate roads : The streets immediately around the Hilton Hotel are narrow, residential and heavily parked. Meeting situations are constant — you will need to judge priority, give way appropriately and demonstrate patience and observation. These roads test the same skills as any narrow residential area, but you may encounter them in the first few minutes of your test when nerves are highest.

The A236 (Mitcham Road / Croydon Road) : A key connecting road between Mitcham and Croydon that features bus lanes, 20 mph zones, pedestrian crossings and transitions between speed limits. Some routes follow this road toward Thornton Heath Pond, which is itself a fast multi-lane roundabout.

Beddington Lane : A long, straight industrial road where examiners sometimes conduct the emergency stop. The road is wide and relatively quiet, making it a logical spot for this manoeuvre.

Mitcham Common area : If your route takes you back toward the original Redhouse Road area, you may drive through roads around Mitcham Common. These include residential streets, speed humps on Commonside East and some quieter back roads that may be used for reversing manoeuvres.

What the Hilton Relocation Means for Your Test

The move from Redhouse Road to the Hilton Hotel is not just a change of address. It changes the character of the first few minutes of your test and shifts which roads feature most prominently. Here is what is different.

The starting environment is busier. At Redhouse Road, you began in a relatively quiet industrial estate. At the Hilton, you begin on the Waddon estate, narrow residential streets with heavy parking, and are quickly onto the A23, a fast dual carriageway. The first five minutes of your test are more demanding than they used to be.

The A23 features on almost every route. From the Hilton’s location, it is nearly impossible to avoid the A23 Purley Way. This means dual carriageway skills, merging, lane changing, maintaining speed, reading overhead signs, are now essential rather than occasional.

Parking at the hotel is limited and time-restricted. Unlike Redhouse Road, where the centre had its own car park, the Hilton charges for parking after 15 minutes. Arrive close to your appointment time and have your instructor drop you at the entrance rather than parking up early.

There is no practice area. The Hilton does not allow test candidates to practise manoeuvres in the car park. All your manoeuvre practice needs to happen in lessons beforehand.

If you have been training around the original Redhouse Road area, speak to your instructor about adding sessions around Waddon and Purley Way before your test. The skills are the same, it is the roads that are different.

What to Expect on Test Day

The practical driving test lasts approximately 40 minutes of on-road driving, with the full appointment running slightly longer when the initial checks and result discussion are included.

Before you drive: Arrive at the Hilton Hotel around 10 minutes before your appointment time. The DVSA has set up a waiting area in the hotel reception. Bring your provisional driving licence — the test cannot go ahead without it. Your examiner will meet you inside and take you to your vehicle.

Eyesight check: You will be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres. If you need glasses or contact lenses, wear them for the entire test.

Safety questions: One “tell me” question before driving and one “show me” question while driving. A wrong answer results in a minor fault, not a fail.

General driving (approximately 20 minutes): The examiner directs you through a mix of road types. At Mitcham, expect the A23 dual carriageway, residential streets, roundabouts, bus lanes and junctions. Examiners assess your observations, mirror use, positioning, speed control and interaction with other road users.

Independent driving (approximately 20 minutes): You will follow a sat nav (provided by the examiner) or road signs to a destination. Canons Leisure Centre and other local landmarks are common navigation points. Missing a turning is not a fault, take the next safe option.

One reversing manoeuvre: Parallel parking, bay parking or pulling up on the right and reversing. You will not know which one until the moment. Practise all three.

Emergency stop (some tests only): Included in roughly one in three tests. Beddington Lane’s long straight is a common location for this at Mitcham.

Getting your result: Back at the hotel, the examiner will go through your feedback sheet and give you your result. Up to 15 minor (driving) faults is a pass. One serious or dangerous fault is a fail.

What If You Do Not Pass?

Just over half of candidates at Mitcham do not pass on their first attempt, it is a demanding centre with real road variety. If that happens to you, the most important thing is understanding exactly what went wrong and fixing it quickly.

• West Wickham (London) : approximately 51.6% pass rate, 10.6 weeks wait, 5.5 miles from Mitcham.
