Your test lasts around 40 minutes. It starts with an eyesight check and two “show me, tell me” questions about the car. Then you’ll drive on a mix of roads for about 20 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of independent driving using a sat nav or road signs. You’ll also be asked to perform one reversing manoeuvre parallel park, bay park, or pulling up on the right. You can make up to 15 minor faults and still pass, but one serious or dangerous fault is an automatic fail.

Most learners say roundabouts, junctions, and clutch control on hills are the trickiest. You can practise on private land without a licence, but you cannot legally drive on public roads without a provisional licence and a qualified supervising driver.
