Getting to Tolworth Test Centre

Douglas House sits on a quiet residential stretch of Douglas Road, roughly two minutes from the A3 Tolworth underpass. The building is clearly signed from the road, but if you have not visited before, it is worth doing a dry run with your instructor so the journey itself does not add any stress on test day.

The closest rail station is Tolworth (South Western Railway), about a 10-minute walk. Bus routes serving Tolworth Broadway, including the 265, 281, K1 and 71 — stop within a few minutes of the centre.

Parking at Douglas House is extremely limited and is reserved for test use. Learners should not practise bay parking in the centre car park, as it can hold up candidates arriving for their tests. If you need to park nearby, there is pay-and-display parking on the opposite side of Douglas Road.

Tolworth Pass Rates — Current DVSA Data

Tolworth has one of the better pass rates among London-area test centres. Here is what the DVSA figures show:

A total of 9,241 practical tests were conducted at Tolworth in the 2024–25 period alone, making it one of the busier centres in South West London.

To put those numbers in context: inner London test centres like Belvedere sit around 35%, while centres further out can reach the mid-50s. Tolworth’s position above the national average and well above the London average reflects the varied but manageable road environment around the centre,  it tests real driving skills without the gridlock conditions that make some central London centres particularly tough.

Current waiting time: Approximately 10 weeks from booking to test date (DVSA data, July 2026). The Great Britain median is around 12 weeks, so Tolworth is slightly quicker than average.

If your test date feels too far away, cancellation slots do open up regularly. Your instructor can advise on checking for earlier availability through the DVSA booking system.

Tolworth Test Routes — What Roads to Expect

The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, and your examiner will choose from several pre-set options on the day, so there is no single route to memorise. That said, there are roads and junctions around Tolworth that come up consistently, and getting comfortable on them will cover most of what the test throws at you.

Roads you are likely to encounter:

The A3 (Kingston Bypass) : This is the feature that makes Tolworth distinct from most London test centres. Routes may take you onto the A3 dual carriageway via the Hook Rise South slip road, where you need to merge into 60 mph traffic and maintain lane discipline on a fast-moving road. Examiners are checking that you can judge gaps, build speed on the slip road and settle into the flow without hesitation or rushing. If dual carriageway driving makes you nervous, this is the section to practise most.

Tolworth Tower Roundabout : A large multi-lane roundabout at the junction of the A3 and A240. Lane selection is critical here. Many learners find this the most intimidating part of the test because you need to commit to the correct lane early, signal clearly and hold position through the roundabout without drifting. Your instructor will walk you through the lane markings until it becomes second nature.

Kingston Road (A240) : A busy main road that passes through a 20 mph zone near local shops. The speed limit change catches learners out, creeping above 20 mph past the repeater signs is one of the most common faults at this centre. Stay aware of the signage and check your speedometer.

Ewell Road : Features bus lanes (check operating hours, you may legally use them outside active times) and some uphill residential sections where you may need a hill start during a manoeuvre. The gradient is not extreme, but it can unsettle learners who have not practised it.

Tolworth Broadway : A busier commercial stretch with pedestrian crossings, parked delivery vehicles and bus stops. Saturday tests here can be noticeably more congested than midweek.

Residential streets off Douglas Road : Narrow roads with on-street parking, where you will need to handle meeting oncoming traffic, give way in tight spaces and manage priority situations. Some of these streets connect to quiet cul-de-sacs that are ideal for reversing manoeuvres.

What to Expect on Test Day

The practical driving test lasts approximately 40 minutes of on-road driving, with the full appointment running slightly longer once the initial checks and result discussion are included. Here is how the test breaks down:

Before you drive: Arrive at Douglas House around 10 minutes before your appointment time. Bring your provisional driving licence, without it, the test cannot go ahead. Your examiner will meet you in the waiting area, confirm your identity and take you outside to begin.

Eyesight check: You will be asked to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres (about five car lengths). This is done in the car park before you get in the car. If you need glasses or contact lenses to pass this, wear them, and keep them on for the entire test.

Safety questions: The examiner will ask one “tell me” question before you start driving (e.g., “Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey”) and one “show me” question while you are driving (e.g., “Show me how you would wash and clean the front windscreen”). Getting these wrong results in a minor fault, not a fail, but knowing them takes seconds of revision and removes one thing to worry about.

General driving (approximately 20 minutes): The examiner directs you through a mix of road types, assessing your observations at junctions, mirror use, positioning, speed control, response to road signs and markings, and interaction with other road users. At Tolworth, this section will typically include at least some of the busier routes described above.

Independent driving (approximately 20 minutes): You will either follow directions from a sat nav (provided by the examiner, mounted on the dashboard) or follow road signs to reach a destination. This section tests whether you can drive safely while making your own navigation decisions. If you miss a turning, do not panic, the examiner is not testing your navigation, only your driving. Take the next safe option and carry on.

One reversing manoeuvre: The examiner will ask you to complete one of the following: parallel parking, bay parking (forwards or reverse into a bay), or pulling up on the right and reversing two car lengths. You will not know which one until the examiner asks. Practise all three.

Emergency stop (some tests only): The DVSA confirms that an emergency stop is included in roughly one in three tests. Your examiner will explain the procedure before asking you to carry it out.

Getting your result: When you return to Douglas House, the examiner will park up and go through your feedback sheet. They will tell you whether you have passed or failed and explain any faults. You are allowed up to 15 minor (driving) faults and still pass. A single serious or dangerous fault is a fail.

If you pass, you will receive a pass certificate and the option to surrender your provisional licence and apply for your full licence immediately.

What If You Do Not Pass?

Not everyone passes first time, and that is completely normal, nationally, just under half of all candidates need a second attempt. The important thing is understanding what went wrong and fixing it before your next test.
