The DVSA Just Changed How You Book Your Driving Test. Here’s What It Means If You’re Learning in South West London
If you passed your theory test a while back and were planning to sort your practical test date whenever it suited you, or leave it to your instructor to sort out, that’s no longer how it works.
Since 12 May 2026, the rules have changed. Only you, the learner, can book, change, or cancel your practical test. Instructors, parents, and any of those third-party “cancellation finder” services can’t touch your booking anymore. If you’ve used one of those apps before to grab an earlier slot, that route’s closed now.
There are two other changes worth knowing about, because they’ll affect how you plan your lessons around a test date.
You only get two changes.
Before this year, learners could shuffle their test date around more or less as many times as they liked. Now you get two changes per booking. After that, you have to cancel and start again from scratch, which means going back into the DVSA queue.
This matters more than it sounds. If you book a test three months out because that’s the earliest slot going, and then life gets in the way you get ill, you need more lessons than expected, your instructor’s away you’ve used up a change already before you’ve even had a proper run at it. Our advice: don’t book until you and your instructor genuinely think you’re close. Booking early “just to have a date” isn’t the safety net it used to be.
Moving test centres is now restricted.
From 9 June 2026, if you want to switch your test to a different centre, you can only move to one of the three nearest ones to your current booking. Learners used to be able to jump around the country chasing a higher pass rate at a quieter centre. That’s gone.
Which brings us to the bit that actually matters most for anyone learning around Wimbledon, Tooting, or the wider SW postcodes.
Which nearby test centre gives you the best shot?
Pass rates vary a lot more between London centres than most learners realise. DVSA’s most recent figures put the London average somewhere around 48%, but individual centres range from the high 50s down to the mid-30s. Traffic density, junction complexity, and how many routes head into genuinely tricky driving (think central pinch-points versus quieter outer roads) all play a part.
A couple of things worth knowing if you’re weighing up where to test:
- Tolworth and Isleworth have both sat well above the London average recently, in the low-to-mid 50s.
- Some centres that sound convenient on paper, closer to town, are easier to get to and post noticeably lower pass rates because the routes themselves are harder. Morden’s a good example of this.
- A higher pass rate doesn’t mean an easier examiner. It usually just means the roads around that centre are less demanding to drive.
Because of the new “three nearest centres” rule, you can’t hop between wildly different parts of London anymore. So the smart move now is to pick your test centre early with your instructor, based on where you’re actually going to be tested and then spend your lessons practising those specific roads, rather than generic routes.

What we’d suggest doing now
If you’re mid-way through lessons with us, don’t book your test the moment you feel vaguely ready. Talk to your instructor first about which of the nearby centres suits your driving best, and let them tell you honestly when you’re close. Once you book, you’ve only got two chances to move things around, so it’s worth getting the choice right the first time.
